Obsessed: Boon Products

Is this not the coolest highchair?

Boon Highchair

I knew when I first saw it that Mateo had to have it! A big thanks go out to our friends Richard & Floyd for gifting Mateo this beautiful chair!  Im really excited for him to use it!

It has great reviews for being sturdy, easy to clean, and stylish of course!  Another plus is that the adjustable height allows it to be used for a longer time.   The first Boon product I bought was this cute countertop drying rack [from Target] and I have been so happy with it. As far as clutter on the counter goes, this is something I won't have to justify to my sister.  (she's is 100% anti-clutter)
Boon Drying Rack

After that I was hooked.  I kept seeing random Boon products at TJMaxx and Marshalls at a fraction of the cost (compared to Amazon) and I now I have a whole collection of modern baby dining ware.
Boon Fluid
Boon Snack Ball
Boon Benders Utencils
Boon Plate Set
Spill Catcher Bowl
You know TJMaxx is my favorite store right? (that includes Marshalls and Homegoods too)
Do you guys shop there?  What has been your best find?

San Diego Part III: We're Still Here

Well... we were going to leave Monday but since our flights didn't look that open [probably due to the holiday weekend] we opted to chill out for a couple more days to avoid any unnecessary stress.
 That's how we roll.  Stress free!
We have had such a wonderful time here with family.  Mateo was 5 months old yesterday.  I can't believe how much he is changing.
 Besides getting cuter everyday, in the weeks we have been in San Diego we have seen the following:
1.  He is scooting (ie.  crawling without being on his knees)
2.  He started reaching for us.  (sooooooooo cute!)
3.  We are pretty sure he is teething already.
4.  He started making this "mmm mmm" whining noise when he is bored and wants to be picked up.
5.  This morning he held his bottle all by himself! [and he hadn't had one in 5 weeks]
6.  He rolled while swaddled. (uh oh)
We are heading home tomorrow and are excited to finish Mateo's nursery. He will start sleeping in his crib and I may even start using those cloth diapers I bought:)  Check out more San Diego pics here .

Inspiration Overload: Stripes on Pinterest

My obsession with stripes on walls probably started a year ago when I found out I was pregnant and started looking for nursery inspiration.  This was one of my first pins on my Pinterest.
I have since painted stripes in my son's nursery (albeit in a different style) and it looks so cool that I don't want to stop there.   I have inspiration overload with stripes on walls and MUST do another area of my house.  I am 99% decided that it will be the hallway.  It definitely needs something, right?
This black and white hallway is stunning.
Here are a few others that get my inspiration flowing:

San Diego Part III: A Little Shopping

When I was pregnant and still didn't know the sex of the baby I kept hoping I would have girl.
Why?
1.  I liked more girl names than boys

2.  I thought dressing a little boy wouldn't be that fun.

Boy, was I mistaken.  I was surprised that once Mateo was born, I was able to find such cute clothes for him.    My two favorite stores, Target and TJMaxx have a great selection.  I usually buy at least one outfit every time I go.  These are from my latest spree:
Not that my little papasito needs clothes to look cute....I mean really...come on
{notice his cute bubble butt}
Could he be any cuter?  Oh those cheeks (all 4 of them) make me crazy!
The lobster outfit is a swim suit and came with a matching sunhat.  So cute!  As you can tell, I am really into stripes....and it doesn't stop with clothing.

I painted stripes on Mateo's ceiling and I will be painting stripes in my hallway when we get back from San Diego.

Another kick I am on [along with everyone else] is chevron.  When mi suegra and I were at TJMaxx the other day I spotted this 6 x 9 wool rug for $99 and immediately put it in my cart.
It's funny how I will hesitate to spend $10 or $20 on something...but not question the cost of other things.  Sometimes you just know when you have to have it, right?   Nonetheless, I thought it was a pretty good deal.  I wasn't even sure where I would put it, but have since decided it will go in my bedroom.   It will look great with my newly painted campaign dresser and my West Elm Moroccan duvet.

Inspiration board coming soon!

San Diego Part II : Enjoying Sun and Surf

Oh San Diego, how we love you!
{la familia en Torrey Pines}
{breastfeeding on the bay}
{walking in Coronado Tidelands Park}
Yes, things do change when you have a baby, but I would not say it has slowed us down one bit ....Mateo's papi is good at that all by himself.  We still don't get out of the house until after noon each day...same as it ever was.

On a side note, I just read a not so good review in the NY Times about a new book called Bringing up Bebe.  It is written by an American woman who had her 3 kids in France and talks about the
different parenting culture there.  Based on this review, her observations don't seem that different than parenting in the U.S.  However, I do like this point:   Parents believe that the baby has to adjust to the parents schedule - not visa versa...and...well...I have always loved France!

A New Salsa Verde Recipe!

We are here in San Diego eating like kings and queens!  Every night is a full on Mexican feast.  It never ceases to amaze me how many different salsas mi suegra makes.  I always learn something new with her in the kitchen.  The other night she introduced us to a new salsa verde.

This salsa is not only easy and delicious, it is beautiful!!
It's very heavy on the cilantro, hence the vibrant green color.
Give it a try.  It will not disappoint.

Salsa Verde Fresca
6-8 tomatillos
5 serrano or jalepeño chiles (less if you don't want too spicy)
1 clove garlic
2 bunches cilantro

Add all ingredients (raw) into blender and blend until smooth.
Serve with chips or on tacos.
 Que Rica!

The Kitchen Plan

When we moved into our house last September we made a long list of changes/updates that we wanted to complete to rid the house of the "builder basic" feel.  These will need to be done over time of course, so we had to prioritize.  Due to our love of cooking and entertaining, the kitchen is high on that list.  Here are a couple pictures before we moved in:
Things we would like to change/add include:
1.  Paint cabinets white (I know what some of you are thinking...but my mind is made up)
2.  Change out black stove and dishwasher to stainless (we already bought stainless fridge)
3.  Add white subway tile back splash
4.  Take out the tile flooring and extend the hardwoods from the dining room into the kitchen (we would also like to refinish wood with a less red stain)
5.  Lower bar to counter height and add bar stools
{looking into kitchen from living room}
Notice how the bar counter really blocks off the kitchen;  it didn't flow.  The height was off too.  It was several inches higher than normal "bar height" so we would've had trouble finding stools that fit.
Here is another view:
{looking into dining/living area from kitchen}
We still wanted a bar for people to hang out while we are cooking, but didn't want anything that obstructs the view.  One day last week, when my parents were here, Ernesto and my dad whipped out a saw and got started on lowering the counter.   A chalk line was snapped for the first cut.
Luckily, it was just made of drywall and some 2x4's and they were able to cut into it easily and re-position the two outlets.
This heavy piece of granite was attached using some type of glue, which could account for it not being completely level, but that 2x4 was not going anywhere, so we kept it and used screws for extra stability and added a couple wood corbels.
Ideally we wanted the counter to be the same height as the island, but to avoid having a huge line in the granite, we opted to set the bar piece just on the edge of the island. Now there is a 1 inch lip separating the island and bar granite pieces and I really like the separation.
Im so glad I have handy men in my life.  What a huge difference it made!
We painted the kitchen walls with Martha Stewart's Morning Fog (#MSL115) and I love it.  It's a very light color and very crisp next to the white wood work.  It will look even brighter once we have the cabinets painted and the subway tile up.  (we did not paint where the tile is going under the cabinets)
The ceiling will be painted River Mist (a darker shade of the walls #MSL119)

You can see above that the back door is painted Magnetite (#MSL278), a rich charcoal gray.  I will paint the inside of the front door this color too.  We have have four interior white doors as well on the first level, and I plan to paint them like the picture below.  (white with dark gray highlights)  I think it's going to look fabulous!
{via Pinterest}

I will show you the view from other direction (into living room) just as soon as we are back from San Diego....and I have it cleaned up:)  I picked up my orange rug from the cleaners last week and it really makes the room.  Even with the $95 cost of dry cleaning, it was a steal!

San Diego Part 1: Family, Football and Fish Tacos

Yep! That is how the Espinoza's do it! No pizza or chicken wings for the Superbowl.  We started off with homemade shrimp cocktails followed by fish tacos.  (Also on the menu were spicy marlin tacos and papas in chili sauce)
The whole familia was at the house for the game.
{la Familia Espinoza}
We arrived San Diego Friday morning without a hitch.   Mateo was a model traveler, sleeping the whole 4 hour flight.  We had a rough first night, I imagine due to the 3 hour time change, but the next night we were back to sleeping through to 6am.   He's a flexible little guy.  A Mexi-CAN.
{our blue-eyed beauty with his tata}
The weather is perfect out here and makes me forget that it is February.   I think we will stay a while.
